Discover how Darren transitioned from the tech industry to the hair and beauty sector. By streamlining his deal flow, he acquired 16 salons in less than a year and built a group heading for a £4 million turnover.
Darren spent 15 years successfully growing IT and tech companies. When his daughter, a trained hairdresser, told him she wanted to open her own salon, Darren immediately stopped her. He advised her to never start from scratch and instead buy a business that already had staff and paying customers.
Despite having zero experience in the hair and beauty sector, Darren tweaked the Dealmakers enquiry letter template and sent out 1,500 direct letters to salon owners in Hampshire. The response was phenomenal. More than 300 owners replied.
While standard direct mail gets a 1 percent response rate, Darren achieved a staggering 20 percent. The market was absolutely packed with highly motivated sellers.
"My daughter came to me and said she wanted to open her own salon. To which I replied, 'Well, why would you open a new salon? Go and find one that is already open with staff and customers.'"
With hundreds of leads pouring in, Darren quickly realised he needed to streamline his approach. He split the acquisition process in two and hired a dedicated team member to handle all pre-completion filtering.
To avoid awkward and time wasting conversations with owners who had completely inflated expectations, Darren designed a system that placed a valuation bracket in front of the seller extremely early in the process. If a salon generated only £5,000 in profit but the owner demanded £200,000, Darren simply walked away.
By automating this filter, he successfully acquired seven salons in just a matter of months.
Managing an ever growing group of salons would be overwhelming for one person. Darren completely removed himself from the daily operations. He hired a highly experienced Managing Director, centralized the finance team, and installed universal salon management software across every single location.
By standardizing stock purchases and driving a heavy sales focus with staff incentives, he drastically increased the margins of every business he acquired.
From a standing start of zero in May, Darren built a group of 16 salons heading for a £4 million turnover and £800,000 in net profit. His new target is to aggressively scale the business to 100 salons across England.
